Pension Sonnenhof (mit Saunaoase)

Pension Sonnenhof welcomed my family for about a week after the end of the holiday period, in January (2023). It is located in Maranza, a hamlet of Rio di Pusteria. We were not there for a skiing vacation but we used the guesthouse as a base to visit several nearby places. About 63 km away from San Candido, 60 km from Lake Braies, 20 km from Bressanone, 60 km from Bolzano, 37 km from Vipiteno, 35 from Brunico, 51 km from Brennero and 91 km from Innsbruck, the pension is situated in an excellent strategic point located at the western beginning of the Puster Valley. In any case, it must be considered that it is a hamlet where there are many hotels and tourist accommodation facilities, but not much else, so you could even get bored if you choose to stay put. The Unterkircher family and staff treated us warmly from the first phone call until we left. The rooms' style and decor were very wood-cabin and this contributes to make the guest feel in a welcoming place. The rooms were clean. In my first room there were no bedside tables, but it was still suitable for one person. When I joined my parents in a triple room, I slept in a bed that was a bit too short for me, probably more suitable for a child. The pillows, however, were too low in all rooms. We stayed on a half board basis. At breakfast there was sweet and savory food available and the waitress at the cafeteria service was very efficient and friendly. The dinner menu was simple and included only one choice of first course, second course and dessert (apart from Friday, when there was a of fish choice too), although the kitchen staff was very accommodating when small changes were communicated in advance. Good food, but I think you can find better in the area. Overall, given the excellent quality-price ratio, the friendliness and the good location in South Tyrol, I would gladly return to Pension Sonnenhof!

Great place to stay! Super friendly family run place. Great breakfast and great dinner cooked from scratch and delicious. The rooms and bathrooms are very clean with amazing views. Easy walk to chairlift. The sauna is very nice too. Don’t miss that. For kids there is a small indoor play kitchen/toy area outside the sauna and an outdoor play area with a playground good for four season outdoor play.
